The Barge Operators Association of Nigeria (BOAN) has taken a major step towards enhancing inland waterway transportation in the country following a strategic engagement with officials of the Port of Antwerp in Belgium.

 

The meeting, held on August 6, 2026, brought together BOAN President, Hon. Olumekun Olubunmi, members of his delegation and senior representatives of the Port of Antwerp led by Associate Manager, Mrs. Niels Reyniers.

 

The discussions centred on strengthening cooperation between both organisations and exploring ways to improve barge transportation through knowledge sharing, technical support and the adoption of proven global practices.

 

Recognised as one of the world’s leading maritime gateways, the Port of Antwerp showcased its successful inland waterway transport system and highlighted how barge operations have contributed to efficient cargo movement, reduced pressure on road networks and improved port productivity.

 

The Belgian port authority also shared insights into the use of technology, safety procedures and integrated logistics systems that have helped position Antwerp as a global leader in maritime and inland waterway transportation.

 

Both sides acknowledged the growing importance of inland waterways in supporting trade and economic growth and agreed that international partnerships remain critical to building a more efficient and sustainable transport system.

 

Speaking after the meeting, BOAN President, Hon. Olumekun Olubunmi, said the engagement aligns with the association’s vision of transforming Nigeria’s barge industry into a more competitive and efficient sector.

 

He noted that the Port of Antwerp’s experience offers valuable lessons for Nigeria as stakeholders seek practical solutions to cargo evacuation challenges and persistent port congestion.

 

According to him, the partnership will provide opportunities for capacity development, operational improvement and the introduction of innovative approaches that can strengthen the country’s inland waterway transport network.

 

Olubunmi also expressed appreciation for the warm reception extended to the Nigerian delegation and commended the Port of Antwerp for its willingness to collaborate with BOAN in advancing the sector.

 

In her remarks, Mrs. Niels Reyniers reaffirmed the Port of Antwerp’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote technical cooperation and professional knowledge exchange.

 

She expressed optimism that the collaboration would create lasting benefits for both organisations while contributing to the growth and modernization of Nigeria’s inland waterways industry.

 

The meeting is expected to lay the foundation for a long-term relationship focused on innovation, investment, operational excellence and sustainable development within the maritime sector.

 

BOAN maintained that it will continue to engage leading maritime institutions and international stakeholders as part of efforts to improve logistics efficiency, support port decongestion and deepen the contribution of inland waterways to Nigeria’s blue economy.
